High performance computing (HPC) has become a powerful workhorse in many scientific fields. Being able to handle huge amounts of data and executing billions of computations at once, HPC systems accelerate research to unknown spheres. The GWDG is providing HPC resources and services to researchers locally, regionally and nationally.
Accordingly, different user groups benefit from the usage of our HPC-systems “Scientific Compute Cluster”, “Emmy” and “Caro”. Admission to the system depends on the user groups.
The GWDG - as a joint venture of the University of Göttingen and the Max Planck Society - has a long tradition of delivering IT and scientific computing services to researchers. All members of these intistutions are directly applicable to use the SCC, which is already done by many scientists. From this user group, the network GöHPC emerged.
This expertise has enabled the GWDG to participate in multiple third-party projects and cooperations and resulted in considerable growth of the HPC department and the founding of the AG Computing. Engaging in the North German Supercomputing Alliance (HLRN - Norddeutscher Verbund für Hoch- und Höchstleistungsrechnen) further sustained GWDG’s stand in the German HPC community and congruously led to becoming one of eight Centers for National High Performance Computing (NHR Centers) together with the University. In addition being one of two data centers of the German Aerospace Center (DLR - Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt) has further grown the HPC department and resulted in the creation of the working group. With the BMBF-funded project AI service centre for sensitive and critical infrastructures (KISSKI), Göttingen has become a national has also become a national center for artificial intelligence (AI).
We offer a well-rounded portfolio of services around scientific computing and HPC:
